PROJECT 2:
GREEN BUILDINGS IN MALAYSIA

INTRODUCTION.

The trend of Green Buildings is growing, with architects and developers increasingly integrating environmental factors into their designs. Despite this, buildings that prioritize energy efficiency and provide comfortable, healthy living and working spaces often do not receive adequate attention in public discourse and media. Nevertheless, decarbonizing our built environment and minimizing the impact of buildings on the surroundings are crucial steps in combating global climate change. Hence, to glean valuable insights from existing green building architecture, this assignment proposes a case study.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES.

  1. Raise awareness and increase public recognition of the importance of green buildings in addressing climate change and creating healthy environments.

  2. Facilitate learning on green building through conducting a case study to extract and share valuable insights on applied environmental strategies.

  3. Promote sustainable practices in architecture encouraging a shift towards more environmentally conscious building designs.

LEARNING OUTCOMES.

  1. Relate environmental design considerations with local authorities, including understanding building regulations and sustainability rating tools. (MLO3)

  2. Examine environmental factors in relation to natural or passive building design strategies used to achieve comfort level. (MLO4)

TASKS.

METHODOLOGY.

Students were required to collaborate within their designated groups to fulfill the assigned tasks. Our primary objective was to select a single green building for an in-depth case study and analyse its environmental strategies, focusing on energy performance, comfort, and other health aspects. Additionally, we were tasked with designing an A1 poster to present the collected information, highlighting the environmental strategies and achievements of the chosen building. Unanimously, we chose the S11 House located in the heart of Petaling Jaya, conducting an on-site visit in the same week after the briefing to gain first-hand insights into its design and environmental features. We gathered relevant data and statistics about the S11 House from various sources, including the Internet and on-site information, to form the foundation of our case study. Simultaneously, we were required to produce a 1-minute video summarizing the key findings and insights from the case study for social media sharing, emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices in architecture and their role in mitigating climate change. This task was completed concurrently with our work on the poster.

POSTER

S11 HOUSE

Architect: Ar. Dr. Tan Loke Mun

The S11 House, nestled in the heart of Petaling Jaya, is a prime example of innovative green architecture. This modern residence showcases cutting-edge environmental strategies, prioritizing energy efficiency, comfort, and sustainability. With its sleek design and thoughtful integration of eco-friendly features, the S11 House offers residents a harmonious blend of luxurious living and environmentally responsible practices.

REFLECTION.

"

I would say that I found this project more enjoyable than the last one. There were fewer arguments and misunderstandings. However, we did manage to get the work done despite our differences in opinions and challenges such as coordinating schedules and sourcing relevant data. Ultimately, our teamwork and dedication ensured the successful completion of the project. Academically, I was able to gain a deeper understanding of the intricate relationship between architecture and the environment. Visiting green buildings and studying their design principles first-hand provided valuable insights into real-world applications of sustainable practices. Reflecting on this experience, I appreciate the importance of sustainable design in addressing environmental challenges and am inspired to continue advocating for environmentally conscious architecture in future endeavors.
