ARC60308: ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN II
MODULE SYNOPSIS.
Architectural Design II (ARC60308) is structured as an introduction to architectural design. This preliminary design module aims to present and explain design through the expression of the perception of ‘self’ and the body, construction, and materiality in terms of tectonics. Students will undertake a series of studio-based exercises and assignments that introduces the fundamental methods, principles and approaches in design thinking and basic spatial design. This will be enhanced with understanding of anthropometrics and designing intrapersonal space with creative exercise involving the body movements and experiences of the user.

PROJECTS.
PROJECT 1 (INDIVIDUAL):
GEOMETRY AND FORM
The design project introduces basic understanding of the design principles, processes and approaches in generating ideas, developing design, and translating it into forms in a workshop based exploratory studio. The project encourages students to tap into their critical and creative sides through exploration of design principles weekly and application via tattoo stamps and models. Students will be working individually and exchanging ideas and thoughts through a series of workshops. The outcome of the project is an architectural self-exploration; students are free to explore forms and techniques that show creativity, identity and explained with rigor through models and tattoo stamps.
PROJECT 2 (GROUP) :
STRUCTURE AND BODY
Project 2: Structure and Body: Material, Anthropometric and Ergonomic Exploration Project 2, called “MY Bamboo” requires students to design and construct a 1:1 structure for a specific action. In groups, students will design and construct a 1:1 structure for a specific real dormant green space to activate its use. Students will be working with bamboo and required to understand the nature and characteristics of the material and demonstrate basic knowledge in construction. Students will explore construction details, e.g., joints, joinery and structural quality. The next step is to amalgamate their design intentions (learned from project 1) into a 1:1 scale construction taking anthropometry and ergonomics into consideration. Students are to develop their design through a series of workshops, tests and investigations involving scaled ‘study models’, exploring architectural elements and principles with anthropometry and ergonomics. The final design will culminate in a 1:1 structure and drawings.
PROJECT 3 (INDIVIDUAL):
SPACE AND SENSORY
Project 3, termed “Space and Sensory” requires students to re-examine their model(s) from Project 1 and further develop it into a series of sensorial spaces. After studying the role of elements and principles in design composition in Project 1, and the role of anthropometrics and ergonomics in the design of spaces in Project 2, they will now examine the role of the senses in the creation of architecture. They will re-examine and re-interpret their model(s) in Project 1, and develop it into a conceptual Architectural Design I | (ARC60208) September 2023 6 | P a g e narrative, to create a poetic architectural representation and their own re-interpretation of their model(s) through a series of spaces, with sensorial experiences, via their chosen materials of timber, steel, concrete or glass. The aim of the project is to instill the notion that design requires thinking, guided by principles (Project 1), architectural spaces must cater for the needs of the human body (Project 2), yet at the same time must feed the needs of the human soul and be a delight to the senses (Project 3).
